1. 拆分方向不明确型事件类话题;
Part 2
Describe an important decision made with the help of other people
You should say:
• What the decision was
• When it happened
• Who helped you to make the decision
• And explain why it was important
Part 2
Describe a time that you looked for information from the internet
You should say:
• When it happened
• What you were looking for
• Where you were searching on the internet
• And explain how you felt about the information
Part 2
Describe an important decision made with the help of other people
You should say:
• What the decision was
• When it happened
• Who helped you to make the decision
• And explain why it was important
“The best decision I ever made was in April 2008. At that time I was interning with an HR consultancy firm. My job was to call candidates and schedule interviews with IT companies.
Every day I used to interact with my boss. During our discussions, I always gave me some positive advice. So, on this particular day, he told me about an investment course he thought I would be interested in. I was hesitant to join it as it was expensive. I told him that I couldn't afford it.
He replied by saying that I should make an investment in myself, as I would see the benefits in the future. Even then I was not convinced. Finally, he told me that he would pay half the cost. It was still a lot for me to pay out but he was so keen for me to do the course, I agreed.
For me, it meant that I couldn't buy a new mobile as planned and that I would have to curb my spending. It turned out to be the best decision I ever made as I learnt a lot and I am glad I pushed myself to do it.
After that, I developed a habit of setting goals for myself at the start of every year and reviewing them on a quarterly basis. Thanks to this amazing experience, I am now into investing in Education and over the past few years, I have taken various kinds of online and offline courses which have helped me brush up my skills and given me new ones. ”
• Hobbies
“One decision that really changed my life was when I decided to quit the cheerleading squad. it wasn't an easy decision as I loved it but it was affecting my studies. I spoke to my dad about it and he made me see that my education was the most important thing.
He was right. When I was out of the team, I was able to focus on my studies, and successfully graduated and went on to get a good job.”
“When I was a teenager I was really into video games, so much so that it was the only thing I was doing. My best friend told me that I was missing out on life and that I should experience new things.
I took on board his advice and it was the best thing I could have done. I started doing more outdoor activities like cycling and skateboarding. I even met a girl. “
•Occupation
“When I started looking for jobs, I was very confused about if I should choose a big company or a small company. Then my friend helped me out and he explained the pros and cons of each of them. He suggested working for a small company would be a good way for me to step out of my comfort zone and do something challenging. I took on board his advice and I selected a small company for my first position.”
“Three years ago, I made a very important decision to leave my stable job of 10 years working as a careers advisor in a college. I did it because I wanted to do something new and an opportunity came up to work with a start-up company.
I made the decision to take the job with the help of my family and friends. Some people believed that it was a very risky choice to make, as the company was not well known and the job appeared too good to be true.
While other people advised me to take the job as it was an opportunity of a lifetime and would surely challenge me and expand my skills. Despite the risks, I am glad that I followed my instincts and was very grateful for all the advice from my friends and family.”
• Appearance
“I was not really satisfied with my appearance and I was thinking about having plastic surgery. My friend suggested that instead, I should just lose weight. It was a more effective and healthy way to make me more beautiful and boost my confidence.
I decided to take on board her advice and started to follow a strict diet and exercise routine. Every day, she motivated me to get up early and do a workout in the gym. There were many times I wanted to give up, but thanks to her, I didn't and the weight dropped off.”
• Marital status
“I had been in a relationship with my girlfriend for seven years and I had been asked so many times when we were going to get married. But I wasn’t really sure as there were still lots of uncertainties. For example, whether I could give her a stable life, whether I was ready to take on the responsibility of a family and whether I was good enough to be a father.
Then I had a good talk with my grandma and she told me that I was old enough and mature enough to get married and that she thought I would make a great husband and father, She also told me that I shouldn’t worry about it too much.
I decided to take on board her advice and I proposed to my girlfriend. We got married a year ago and I now realize I was worrying unnecessarily.
“My husband had an affair which made me really sad. I wanted to get a divorce, however, as we have a son, I didn't know if it was better to try and work it out. I had a talk with my friend.
She told me that getting divorced wasn’t an ideal choice and I should give him another chance. She said that if I wanted to get divorced, I had to consider the effects it would have on my son. Her advice really helped and made me see both sides.
In the end, I decided to stay with him and I hope it was the right decision.”
“I had a crush on a boy who was very handsome. I saw him during a singing competition and I was really mesmerized by his beautiful voice. I was desperate to meet him but unfortunately, I was a bit shy and timid.
I didn't want to make a fool of myself. My friend told me that I should be brave and that if I didn't try, I would never know. I thought about it and decided to go for it.
Unfortunately, he wasn't that keen to get to know me but I felt proud of myself for putting myself out there and decided it was his loss.”
01What the decision was
Example one:
An important decision I had to make was deciding which country to choose for my overseas studies. Some people told me I should go to the USA but I knew the fees were really high, and some people said to go to the UK but I wasn't that keen because of the bad weather. I didn't know what to do so I asked my cousin what she thought.
Example two:
When I graduated from university, I was really confused about my future. I had no idea if I should create my own business or just find a job somewhere. I was completely lost and could barely sleep. Then I turned to my friend for help.
02When it happened
Example one:
I went to her on a Sunday night. It was absolutely pouring down so I just jumped in a taxi and went straight to her house.
Example two:
I called her really early in the morning, around 5. I knew she was still sleeping, but I really needed some advice. She didn’t mind at all and told me to come over straight away.
03 Who helped you to make the decision
Example one:
Even though my cousin had never studied abroad, she had lots of life experience and I trusted her very much. Over the years, she has helped me make lots of good decisions. Every time I have a problem, she is the first person I turn to.
After talking to her for the whole afternoon, she helped me select several countries that I could choose from, including the UK, Holland and Australia and because I was fascinated by the British accent, I finally chose the UK.
Example two:
Even though my friend was my age, she had much more work experience than me. After our freshman year, she set up her own business. At first, it was just a small store selling snacks and stationery on my campus, but now she has a small company specializing in E-commerce.
I knew she was the best person to go to for advice. We talked for the whole night and she told me the pros and cons of working for companies versus creating my own business. When I went home, I had a good talk with my parents as well. Finally, I decided to create my own business like her.
04Why it was important
Example one:
Thanks to my cousin, I made a good decision that was really important to me. When I studied in the UK for a year, I got a better understanding of the culture. More importantly, I had many opportunities to practice my English and my British accent.
Now when I chat with others, they all complement my accent. The university I studied in the UK is also well-known so not only did I learn a lot, I was offered quite a few positions as a result.
Example two:
It was one of the most important decisions I have ever made. Even though creating a business was difficult and challenging, I have gained so much from doing it.
Compared to my other classmates who went to work for companies, I think I have developed far more skills. My business is very successful and I am making a lot of money. I am so glad I took on board the advice and made the decision I did.
