托福写作对于表达，追求的原则是在语法正确的基础上，表达准确且高大上， 分数则会越高。在E-rater评分的时候， 检索词汇/搭配的地道性和难度等级，会影响得分。所以同学们可以有意识地积累一些地道闪光的表达，以此获得更高的分数。
本文从高质量外刊the Economist入手， 向大家展示阅读外刊对于词汇积累的帮助(part 1)同时也会补充托福独立写作中最常考题材一教育类一相关表达(part 2)。
Part1：theEconomist分析+提取
【外刊精读是对于提升英语能力长线发展的上上策，对于仅仅只想短期备考的同学，可以略读本部分；对于想长远提升英语能力的同学，这部分可以借鉴。】
(请大家阅读下面的句子， 并重点关注“glimpse”)
下面的句子出自于经济学人2020.2月第三周期刊：
“FOR A GLIMPSE of how immigration is changing Poland，head to Hala Koszyk ， an Insta gram-friendly food hall in the middleof Warsaw.”[简单翻译：想要看看移民如何改变波兰， 去Hala Koszyk 就行]
“But Mr Gui has only grown more out spoken. Interviewed on
Swedish public radio in November， he sounded like a gangster：“We
Treat our friends with fine wine， but for our enemies we have
Shot guns. Mr Gui offers a glimpse of a newly forceful brand of
Chinese diplomacy.”[简单翻译：......朋友来了有美酒，豺狼来了有猎枪。Gui先生让我们看到了一个新的中国强力外交]
下面的句子出自于经济学人：2020年二月第二周期刊：
“TO GLIMPSE the impact of the new coronavirus on global businesses， consider Apple.[简单翻译：想要看看新冠病毒如何影响全球商业，看苹果公司就行。.....]
这三句话给了glimpse这个词的动词和名词的用法， 可以提取到的句型有三个：
1.：For a glimpse of XXX， head to YYY.
2.：XX offer(s) a glimpse of YYY
3.：To glimpse XXX， consider YYY.
这三个句型都是非常地道的表达，在托福中，我们对分论点逻辑推理完成的时候，往往会配上一个例子，而上述的三种句型就可以用于逻辑推理和例子之间的过渡。比如：
Some people believe that going to school early in the morning is good for students study. Other students want to start a day late in the morning. Which opinion do you agree with and why?
假设我的观点是：支撑学生去学校早：
分论点：Going to school early could boost students academic performance.[....逻辑推理(因果论证) .....] For a glimpse of the validity of the point under discussion， head to Chengdu No.7 Highschool.[..........例子.....]
中间绿色高光的句子，还可以换成：An experience of mine offers a glimpse of how the point under discussion holds water. 也可换成：To glimpse the validity of this point， consider/witness my sister.
阅读《经济学人》可帮助消化、提取可以用于文章逻辑线上的句型。
同时，阅读外刊对于短语积累的作用亦不容忽视，比如：
“Nearly 4m people may lose jobs as a result of cuts in industrial capacity， but strong demand for labour in the services sector， from restaurants to healthcare， is cushioning that blow.(the Economist， 5thJan， 2018) [简单翻译：接近400w人由于工业产能降低失业，但是服务业(从餐厅到医疗)强大的人力需求正缓冲了该打击。]
这一句话就可以学到两个表达：
1.N， from A to C， 用于列举子集。
E.g.：reading can develop a number of talents， from creation to
higher-order thinking.
2.cushion the blow.这个表达可以用于大家写双边论证的时候， 如果反方观点是消极的， 且提出一个具体的disadvantege， 那个我们反驳的时候， 除了单纯的写solve/tackle/deal with..之类，还可以说XXX could help cushion this blow.//This blow could be cushioned by......

1.Burn the midnight oil
指的是学习或者工作到很晚。
比如：
After burning the midnight oil for the whole semester， I got an average of 91 in the final exams， up by almost 10 points.
2.The nuts and bolts of sth
指的是实践(practical facts) ， 反义词是theoretic knowledge Apart from theoretic knowledge， students are also required to conduct fieldwork so as to know the nuts and bolts of the subjects of
study.
3.：形容学的好/掌握的好：
Have/establish a good grasp of sth
Have/establish intimate knowledge of sth
Have/establish a working knowledge of sth
4.：尽全力做某事， 你只会try one’s best吗?
Fight tooth and nail to do sth
