1. Some people prefer to read reviews written by critics before watching a movie. Others prefer to watch the movie without reading reviews of it. Which way do you prefer and why?
I will definitely choose to watch the movie without reading reviews about it.Cuz most importantly, the reviews usually contain a lot of spoilers and plots, and even some really important details will be written out. So after reading such a review, there will be no surprise for me when I watch the movie, which will be pure meaningless and time-consuming.For instance, after reading the review of Harry Potter and theDeathly Hollows,I learned that Snape-the biggest villain has become the best person, who tried to help and protect Harry the whole time, and his short but warm word"always" has moved countless people... etc. How can I be touched anymore when I see the movie after knowing all such things? I was like a cold stone sitting among people with tears in their eyes judging me as "a person with no feelings”.
2. Some people prefer sending messages while others prefer making phone calls directly. Which do you prefer and why?
I prefer sending messages. On one hand, sending messages helps me convey my meanings more completely and comprehensively. When we speak, we may easily miss some key points because of insufficient consideration. Once I did a project with my classmate. We first made phone calls to talk about our project, but I found that it was an inefficient way. I noticed that we always ignored some topics and had to discuss them again. If I had written down the topics in the message, we would have saved much time. On the other hand, sometimes we want to express our discontentment, but it is very embarrassing to directly speak to others.Writing can help us avoid awkwardness, so I prefer sending messages when communicating with others.
3. Some people like to study for exams in the morning, while others would like todo that in the evening.Which do you prefer and why?
Well, I prefer studying for exams in the morning because I have a better memory in the early morning, so I can absorb much more knowledge. I tend to wake up at 6.00a.m. during exam week. And in the following two hours, I can easily remember the key points and have a retentive memory. However, in the evening, I may feel tired and cannot study efficiently. What is more, I find it is quieter in the morning and I can better concentrate on my study as my roommates are used to getting up late.I can use these precious hours to recite key points in the textbooks, read reference books and so on. Without distraction from others, I think morning is better for me to do an exam review.
4.Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Schools should limit the time that students use to do a part-time job to one hour a week.
I don't think there should be a limitation as long as students can manage to strike the right balance between their work and study.By taking part time jobs, school kids can have a better picture of the real work-life, and also acquire practical work experience and hands-on skills which cannot be gained from textbooks. If the time is limited to only one hour a week, it's virtually impossible for students to find a job that can allow them to learn anything valuable. In addition, it is also important for students to cultivate their interpersonal skills while working. Every week, they have to spare at least a whole day to work in a company, so that they can learn how to communicate with their employers, colleagues, as well as customers.
5. Do you agree or disagree that parents should teach their kids to be independent at an early age?
I agree that parents should teach their kids to be independent at an early age simply because independence is not only an ability but also a way of living that needs to be learned when the kids are young. Surely kids cannot be totally independent when they are old enough, but at some time they can learn to wash their own clothes, tidy up their own rooms and so on. It is important for the parents to teach their children that they should do their own job independently instead of waiting for parents to get it done. This can also help children become more responsible and learn a lot of surviving skills which are essential to their future life.
6. Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Playing sports might make children become overly aggressive in later years.
I don't think children who play sports will become overly aggressive when they grow up. On the contrary, they will learn how to follow the rules and control themselves.Even in some competitive sports like football or basketball, young children cannot simply use their physical strength to win. If they don't obey the rules, they will get punished or even kicked out of the game. In this way, they will know that violent behaviors like pushing or hitting won't get them anywhere. In addition, when playing team sports, young children will learn how to cooperate with others. Individual ability can't help score because one person will be easily blocked by the other team. They sometimes have to sacrifice their own show time but to assist their teammates to be the super star.
7.Some college students take classes during the summer.Others take the summer off from school, so that they can rest or work. Which do you think is better and explain why?
Taking summer classes is better for students. First, students can graduate from college early. For example, when I was in college, I enrolled in at least two courses during the summer. In doing so,I was able to graduate from college within three years, and then I successfully obtained a job offer.Second, students can better focus on their studies.During regular semesters, there are often many students on campus with a wide variety of activities going on. Sometimes, it is hard for students to dedicate much of their time and energy to their studies. However, during the summer, most students would go back home, so the campus is much quieter. This would be an ideal environment for hardworking students to concentrate on improving their academic abilities.
8.Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? University libraryshould be open to the public.
I think the university library should not be opened to the public.First of all, a lot of people do not know how to cherish and treasure public services, so maybe these resources will be under risks. For example, many visitors and children will tear apart the books, or even damage the computers. So the university should spend a lot of money to fix it. So this is the main reason why I don't think this is a good idea. Secondly, if we do so, many students may not use the library anymore, and these privileges will be taken away. You know, these privileges might be very important to the students because the students paid good money for them.So they have rights to use it. So I think the university library should not be opened to the public.
9. Do you agree or disagree with the following statement:it is important for young people to learn domestic skills such as cooking, sewing, caring for children.
Actually, I do agree with this idea. First of all, learning such life skills could build the young's responsibility and cultivate their kindness. Take cooking as an example. In my home, when I was a young girl, my sisters and I always took turns helping my mother cook dinner.Sometimes my mother assigned some tasks to us, such as defrosting an item or collecting the ingredients from the pantry, and we learned personal responsibility by doing so. Furthermore, these living skills such as sewing, cooking and caring for others help young people to be more independent. All of those skills aren't taught in school, but every adult has to master those when they live independently.

In our upcoming lesson, we will explore the evolution of public health and its impact on the well-being of individuals. Considering the significant progress we've made in healthcare and nutrition, as well as the ongoing challenges such as sedentary lifestyles and stress, I'd like you to reflect on the following question: Do you believe that people are generally healthier now than they were in the past? Why or why not?
Paul
I believe that people are generally healthier today than they were in the past, and the advancements in medical care play a significant role in longer life expectancy. With the development of new drugs and treatments, we're able to combat illnesses that were once fatal, such as various forms of cancer and heart diseases.
Claire
While it's true that we've made incredible strides in healthcare and nutrition, the lifestyle-related health issues we face today were less common in the past, it's not just about medical advancements; it's about how we live our lives day to day. The quality of life is being compromised by our poor eating and exercise habits.
Answer:
People are generally healthier now than they were in the past. Although people live as a sedentary life and have more pressure, more technologies and better economic situations bring more benefits for people. People know the bad living habits, so they use many technological devices, such as electronic watches, assist them to supervise their health at anytime. It is convenient for people to know their health situation at any time at any place instead of going to hospitals frequently. If they face with severe health problems, they have the choice to insult with professional doctors and get the cure to be healthy.More importantly, better economic situations are key to keep people healthy. However, in the past, people suffered from hunger and lack of nutritious ingredients from various vegetables and so on.

We've been discussing the process of starting a new business and one of the most critical aspects of this process is staffing. That is, deciding which people to hire. Please discuss the following question: Is it better for new businesses to hire experienced veterans of the industry or to staff the business with younger employees who are right out of university? Why do you think so?
Claire
I think a company should staff a business with the most experienced employees possible. If you're starting a new business, you need people around you who know what they are doing and can quickly get the business up to speed. Spending time training inexperienced people will slow you down.
Paul
I understand what Claire is saying, but if you are starting a new business, you want people who are particularly enthusiastic and energetic. Who better than a recent graduate to bring those qualities to the job? You would be guaranteed an ambitious hard worker.
Answer:
It is undeniable that recent graduates can bring enthusiasm to the table, as Paul rightly points out. This energy can be contagious within a team and uplift the morale, which is especially crucial fora fledgling company navigating through obstacles. However, in my opinion, it is more advantageous for new businesses to recruit experienced industry veterans. These seasoned professionals have honed their practical expertise over years of experience and are better equipped to tackle the challenges that confront a startup. For instance, consider an electric vehicle startup in its nascent stage; it requires expertise to advance research on battery and charging technology, as well as autonomous driving systems. The intricate challenges in these areas are best addressed through the practical wisdom and expertise of seasoned industry veterans, rather than relying solely on fresh graduates.

This week we will discuss issues faced by secondary school administrators.I'm referring to schools for teenage students. One such issue is students who change schools. Students change schools for many different reasons, the most common being a family move. On the discussion board, I want you to exchange ideas about what schools can do to make the transition to a new school easier for teenagers.
Paul
I think schools should assign new students a fellow student who can help them adjust. The"student buddy" can do things like make sure the new student can find the cafeteria or the right classrooms. For new students, it's a lot easier to ask a fellow student a question rather than ask a teacher or the principal.
Claire
I would require new students to sign up for some school club or activity that meets outside of class. That way, new students would have an easy way to meet other students in a friendly environment. It would give them a group to immediately identify with.
Answer:
From my point of view, schools can build a club mainly for new teenagers in the school. The club consists of many old students in different grades and classes who are enthusiastic in helping new classmates adjust to new school as soon as possible. These old students are able to aid them in finding the right places and knowing about specific rules and so on. It is the best way for new teenagers to be familiar with new school and spend more time in knowing more friends, which offers them good experience and get rid of missing their friends in the old school all the time. Otherwise, they will feel great pressure and lonely, which is detrimental to their adjustment of new life.

One traditional method of classroom instruction is lecturing. Lecturing involves the teacher talking about a topic for an extended period of time and expecting students to learn by listening attentively. Today, some educators believe that teachers should limit how much time they spend lecturing and instead teach by encouraging in-class discussions and having students work in groups. However, some teachers still teach primarily by lecturing. Do you believe lecturing is an effective teaching method? Why or why not?
Claire
I believe lecturing can be an extremely effective way for professors to teach if they have strong communication skills. Some of my most memorable classes have been taught by brilliant lecturers who captivated me with their engaging speaking style, ability to explain complex topics clearly, and passion for their subject matter.
Andrew
I don't think pure lecturing works well as a teaching method. Without student participation, professors have no way to assess if students actually comprehend the material. Students can easily zone out during long lectures if they are just passively listening. Active learning through discussions, activities, and questions lets students engage with content and teachers identify gaps in understanding.
Answer:
In the past, the major method of teaching was lecturing while today students tend to involve in discussion or thinking in the class. If teachers mainly impart the knowledge to students, they are difficult to appeal their attention to listen to class. It is possible for them to surf on the internet by phones or other technological equipment instead of learning the knowledge in a boring way. However, if teachers change their traditional lecturing, students will have more interests in this class and tend to focus their attention on learning it carefully. For example, it is better for teachers to combine the technological equipment to pose the questions and instruct students to think. Also, students can be divided into several groups to compete with each other and in this process they can have more communication and discussions. The new methods of teaching are effective for both teachers and students.

In recent years, there has been ongoing debate regarding the relevance and necessity of public libraries. Some argue that in the digital age, where information is readily available online, libraries may have lost their significance. What are your thoughts on the importance of libraries today? Do you believe cities should continue to maintain public libraries?
Claire
Libraries were relevant when books were the main source of knowledge and people couldn’t afford personal libraries. But in our digital world, public funding for libraries is an unnecessary expenditure. With so much information online, who needs physical books? Very few people read anymore. I haven't stepped foot in a library for years.
Paul
Public libraries are still valuable community resources. While digital information is widespread, libraries offer engaging programs that inspire kids' love of reading. From story times to summer reading clubs, these activities get children excited about books in a way websites can't match.Libraries nurture the next generation of readers -we shouldn't abandon them yet.
Answer:
Public libraries are the vital part of citizens in different ages, which cannot be provided by digital information. In addition to the resources in the library, the environment is also necessary for people to read and study there. To be specific, the decoration and arrangement of books, lights and space can offer people a kind of special atmosphere of quietness which helps them calm down and get rid of the pressure outside of this library. And we know that books and resources in the library enable people to absorb more different knowledge and information all over the world. However, in this aspect, digital information online are not comparable to it in the library. This kind of atmosphere of studying together with many strangers in many ages can inspire people to learn from each other in this real contact.
