2022年1月8日托福独立写作范文分享:有关防止考试作弊
Which way do you think is the most effective way for a school to reduce the phenomenon of cheating on exams?
1. To increase punishment for cheating
2. to ask parents to monitor their children
3. To ask teachers to create other exams situations in which students can hardly cheat
It is possible that the history of cheating is as old as that of exams. For a long time, the designers and monitors of exams have a great headache over cheating, since cheating may create unfairness to those who sit the exams honestly, and no one is sure what is the best way to prevent cheating. Some people point out that parents could play a better role of monitoring children or teachers should design an exam situations where students can hardly cheat. However, from my perspective, the best way to stop cheating is to increase the punishment for cheating.
First of all, increased punishment will make students be afraid to cheat. It is usually the case that people do something for benefits and when the risk is not that high, not as high as benefits, people will still tend to do it even though it may mean taking some risks. But when the consequence surmounts the benefits, most people will reconsider their behavior and believe it is no longer worthwhile to take the risk. For example, if students who cheat in the exam are only punished by exposing their names in public, they may still cheat, since getting their names public may not make too much difference to their life. However, if the school decides to expel those cheating students from school, then they will probably stop cheating, because being expelled will mean that they have no schools to attend after that, which far exceeds the benefits they may get from cheating. Thus increasing the punishment can effectively stop cheating.
Moreover, it is not practical to ask parents to monitor their children. Parents have great responsibilities as they are supposed to fulfill their roles in society and also make enough money to support the whole family. Therefore, it is natural for parents to spend at least 8 hours a day on work. Some of them even have to spend 10 hours. Besides that, parents are also occupied with various kinds of household chores, such as cooking, cleaning the house, washing clothes, buying groceries, and so on. In this case, they can barely spare any time to monitor their children who usually spend at least 6 hours at home doing various kinds of assignments and projects. In addition, parents have left school many years ago and thus they have no idea of what projects their children are doing. Hence, even though they have time to monitor their children, they probably don’t know how to do it. Therefore, it is not practical to ask parents to play this role.
Furthermore, it is almost impossible to create exams situations in which students can hardly cheat. Teachers may be very innovative and can think of ways to prevent students from cheating. However, the number of students is much bigger than that of the faculty. Thus it is natural for students to think of more ways to cheat. For example, teachers may decide to monitor students closely during exams to ensure that nobody cheats, but students may still manage to send signals to other students to cheat, like different fingers meaning different choices in the multiple choice questions; teachers may then put students’ desks more far apart on the playground so that they cannot see each other clearly to give signals, and then students may choose to use wireless earpieces to get answers from someone outside the exam site. Therefore, it is almost impossible for teachers to design exams situations where students cannot cheat.
To sum up, increasing punishment for cheating is the best way to prevent cheaing in the exams.
