Being responsible is important to people, since nobody would like to hang out or work with irresponsible people. Although everyone agrees with the significance of responsibility, they tend to have different ideas about how to make children more responsible. Some suggest that children should be encouraged to keep pets, which they believe is the best way to learn responsibility. However, from my perspective, caring for an animal is not the best way to learn responsibility.
Admittedly, caring for an animal can help children be more responsible to some extent. It is because when children take care of their own pets, they will learn their role and their responsibility. For example, a child may have a dog. At first, he is very excited, as a dog is a new thing to him. So he is willing to spend lots of time feeding, playing with, and walking the dog. He may even clean the dog poop. However, after a few weeks, he may grow tired and stop doing all of those things. Then his mother may be upset with him and tell him that he has to take care of his dog. Thus he may be forced by his mother to feed and walk his dog. Gradually, he would realize that he is his dog’s master and he has the responsibility to take care of the dog, which means he will be more responsible. However, to argue that keeping pets is the best way to learn responsibility is not right, since there are other more important ways, such as doing household chores and joining sports teams.
For one thing, doing household chores can better help children learn. Though keeping pets is a good way, it also has problems, since usually a large quantity of parasites live on pets. Therefore, spending a long time with them may potentially put children in danger of infection. In contrast, doing household chores will not have this problem. This is because children can do some easy household chores, such as making beds, folding clothes and so on. Even though they have to do something that is a little bit dangerous, they can wear something to protect themselves. For example, they can wear a mask when sweeping floor, so that they will not breathe the dust in; they can wear a pair of gloves while washing dishes, in order that the detergent will not hurt their hands. In this way, they will not only learn responsibility, but also stay safe.
For another, joining sports teams is also a better way. When children join a sports team, they will surely learn to play their position. For example, if a child joins a basketball club, he will learn to play his role. For instance, if he is a point guard, he is supposed to grab the ball and pass the ball to other team members to get the point, instead of shooting the ball himself, even though shooting the ball is usually the most eye-catching behavior. Thus he can learn to be responsible in the sports team. Meanwhile, while learning responsibility, he could also maintain a good body shape, as playing basketball involves a lot of jumping and running which will burn the extra calories and increase muscle mass. On the contrary, keeping pets doesn’t really require much exercise. Even walking the dog can’t be compared with the running and jumping in playing all kinds of sports. Therefore, joining a sports team is surely a better way.
To sum up, keeping pets is not the best way to learn responsibility for children.
