Traditions are defined as customary or established ways of doing things in a family, community, or culture. Some people believe that it is important to follow traditions even when those traditions conflict with or are quite different from their own individual preferences. Other people believe that individual preferences are more important than traditions. Which view do you agree with and why?
The fast development of technology and education has given people more and more knowledge about this world and themselves and each of them has developed their own way of dealing with things. When their way of handling things comes into conflict with the tradition, some people insist that they should do the things in the way they prefer. However, from my perspective, it is actually more important to follow the tradition.
To begin with, following the tradition is beneficial to family relationships. For example, in China, Spring Festival is supposed to be the time of family reunion and especially on the Eve, all the family members are expected to get together and have a big dinner. However, the fast advance of technology has rendered young people nowadays more attractive ways to entertain themselves, such as watching a movie, playing board games, and playing computer games with their friends. Those activities become so popular that they have made many young people leave their family members on the Eve of Spring Festival and hang out with their friends all night. In this case, the already very short time of communication between family members gets even shorter, which surely won’t benefit the relationships among them. In contrast, if those young people could give up their so called “preference” and choose to stay with other family members on the Eve of Spring Festival, they could talk about their happy moments and trouble in their life to get to know one another more over the big dinner. Laughing over funny stories and giving suggestions to troubles can bring the whole family together.
Moreover, tradition can be good to the order of the whole society as well. Many culture believes that it is important to stay quiet in the public places, such as buses or subways, to ensure a good environment for everybody. But this may contradict some people’s preference. For example, a salesperson may depend on his or her phone for his or her monthly income, since his or her income is usually in proportion to the amount of sales he or she has made within the month. Thus it is common to see that a salesperson sticks to his or her phone all the time, sending messages or receiving phone calls. And sometimes, the phone just rings when he or she is on the subway. It is his or her natural reaction to pick it up and starts to talk loudly over the phone, which may create much noise within the carriage and cause negative impact on other passengers who are trying to take a short nap or thinking about their own study or jobs. As a result, there may be conflicts or even fights between the salesperson and other passengers. Conversely, if the salesperson chooses to wait until he or she is off the train to pick up the phone call, though this is in conflict with their preference, the fights and quarrels within the carriage can be avoided.
Furthermore, following tradition can help people in the long term. There’s a saying of “no sweet without sweat”, telling people to make lots of efforts before they should enjoy themselves. This can be completely different from what people want in reality, since it is not uncommon for people to favor enjoyment over making efforts. For instance, students may prefer to playing video games to studying, as playing video games can bring much fun while studying is never easy. In this case, if students don’t follow the tradition and make decisions based on their interest, they may play games all day long and don’t want to work out even one Math problem. This seems to be harmless in the short term, because they may still get a grade that can get by in school. However, when this trend continues, they may be lagged behind in school eventually, since they couldn’t get enough exercises or reviews after class to make sure they remember the things they have learned in class, especially when the things they are learning are getting harder. On the contrary, if those students choose to follow the tradition and believe in making efforts before enjoyment, they would know that they should finish all the homework before they can play games. Thus, their grades can always remain good in class.
To sum up, following tradition is definitely a better choice for people.
