背景故事
This idiom originated in the early 1800s.It was used to refer to a particular way food that served an unwanted(不欢迎的)guest in medieval England.At the time，it was customary(习俗的)to welcome visitors to a house with hot meals.However， if someone was given a cold shoulder of whatever meat， the act was considered as adirect and subtle(微妙) way to communicate that they had overstayed(逾期) their welcome and should leave.In other words，giving the could shoulder means to be unfriendly to someone and ignore them deliberately(深思熟虑的) .
这个习语起源于1800年代初期。在中世纪的英格兰，这是为不
受欢迎的客人提供食物的一种特殊方式。当时，通常的习俗是用热腾腾的菜肴来招待来家里做客的朋友。但是，如果主人不太喜欢这个客人，或是觉得这个客人待的时间太长了，就会给客人上一道冷菜一肩胛肉。其实这个行为就是给该客人传递一个信号：你待的时间太久了，该走啦。
因此， 如今我们用give the cold shoulder这个短语来表示：对某人不友好并故意忽略他们。
