Nowadays, it is very hard to isolate children from advertising, especially those implanted in children’s TV programs or computer games. Children see advertisements on a daily basis, and the negative effects are widely recognized.
The main concern is about the content of such advertisements which tempt children into buying various products through vivid pictures, fascinating audio-visual effects and attractive heroic cartoon figures. Children, having no adequate judging ability for purchase, tend to ask for goods such as a toy or a snack as soon as they watch a commercial. Thus an unhealthy consuming habit can be developed and this brings financial pressure to some parents. Meanwhile youngsters are exposed to flows of rubbish food advertisements today and obesity is an immediate result from this. What is worse, these advertisements set a trend that adolescents would be very likely to follow unconsciously because they have developed strong desires for what their environment seems to be in favor of.
However, it has to be admitted that commercials targeting at children are a kind of promotion for sale from the perspective of manufacturers and merchants. Not only for these people, but high sales also carry great significance for the whole economy of a nation because of the contribution of goods production to GDP. To be realistic, how can advertisements be totally banned in this materialistic and consuming-focused world? Even so, economical consideration should not be the excuse for the abuse of advertisements. Strict regulations should be adopted at an attempt to protect children from drowning in commercial campaign.
To sum up, since it is not feasible to completely prohibit children advertisements, the right thing to do may be to regulate advertising and control its quality.
