I would like to describe a photograph I have seen in the Palace Museum. You may not know this year marks the sixth centenary of the construction of the Forbidden City. Therefore, a grand celebration is being held now. A few days ago, I went to the Palace Museum and found a photograph exhibited in the hall, which is a superb panorama of this museum in ancient times. Actually, it is a photograph of a traditional Chinese painting created during the reign of Qian Long, which is about 250 years old. The whole picture truly depicts the bird’s eye view of the whole capital city, extending northward from the residential markets outside Qianmen all the way to the imperial forbidden area. I was amazed at how imaginative the royal painter was. It looked as if he had really been in a helicopter and finished his aerial painting. It could be learned obviously from the painting that the craft had benefited from a western painting style, but it still offered a perfect blend of traditional Chinese charm with modern western skills. I considered it as the most magnificent part of this exhibition because the photograph has presented numerous details whilst maintaining the traditional Chinese essence.
I am very glad to see the museum has curated such excellent exhibitions covering a wide range of themes including historical architectures, traditional decorative arts and themed paintings and calligraphy, bringing a brand new experience to visitors.
