Laozi was keen on learning from his childhood. His family employed many erudite and knowledgeable elders as his teachers, to whom Laozi would often raise insightful philosophical questions.
"Sir, what is tian (sky, Heaven)?" he once asked.
Pleased with his diligence and curiosity, the teacher answered,"It is what you see when you look up, which appears limpid and righteous."
Laozi seemed confused: "How is one to understand the words 'limpid and righteous'?"
"You can understand them as tai kong (space or supreme void)."
"So what is beyond this tai kong?"
"Just something more limpid and righteous."
"Then what is the most limpid and righteous?" Laozi pursued.
Confronted with his perseverance, the teacher confessed, "I'm afraid my limited knowledge cannot give you a sure answer, since it wasn't recorded anywhere or mentioned by any of the sages."
