Nowadays， the term“white elephant”denotes any burdensome(负担) ， expensive and useless possession(财产) that is much more trouble than it is.The origins of the phrase come from Siam(暹罗)(modern-day Thailand) .
White or very pale(苍白) elephants were so highly prized that when one was discovered， it immediately became the possession of the King.However， they were practically useless.As they were deemed(认为) to be sacred， they were n't allowed to be worked and required special， expensive food and housing.So the cunning(狡猾)kings of Siamused to give white elephants away to anyone who displeased(得罪) them or had fallen out of favour so that they would be forced tospendafortune keeping the precious animals.The recipient of a white elephant would be unable to get rid of it so the upkeep(保养) could ruin them financially.
如今，“白象”一词所指的是任何繁重的负担，昂贵且无用的财产。该短语的起源来自暹罗王国(现代泰国)。在当时，白色或肤色苍白的大象非常珍贵，以至于发现一头后便会立即成为国王的财产。但是，它们实际上是无用的。由于它们被认为是神圣的，因此不允许它们干活，并且需要特殊，昂贵的食物。因此，狡猾的暹罗国王曾经把白象赠予得罪了他，或失宠的人，迫使他们不得不花费大笔财富来养这尊贵的白象。
